Overall Wellness Connection to Academic Success

Kaleidoschool believes that excellent overall health leads to academic success. Overall health means a balance of good diet, physical exercise, sufficient amount of sleep and good mental health. At our school, we are here to support the families and students in achieving overall health through community health classes, resources and services provided by local health organizations, and a well balanced physical educational program.

Howard Taras, M.D., Acting Chief of Community Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine was commissioned to look over research to find the relationship between school performance and health concerns. Below is a summary of what Taras found.

* Not getting enough sleep (whether having trouble sleeping or not wanting to go to sleep) equals poor academic achievement.

* Physical exercise is important.  Taras states, "...physical activity improves circulation, increases blood flow to the brain and raises norepinephrine and endorphins that are often credited with reducing stress, improving mood, and inducing a calming effect after exercise. "

*A healthy breakfast helps children do better in school. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a rapid four-fold rise in obesity among children ages 6 to19 over the last 20 years. Often other illnesses follow obesity, such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension.
